What is the Thyroid?

The thyroid is a gland in the neck that secretes hormones regulating growth and development through the rate of metabolism.

Thyroid Problems

Through the hormones it produces, the thyroid gland influences almost all of the metabolic processes in your body. Thyroid disorders can range from a small, harmless goiter (enlarged gland) that needs no treatment to life-threatening cancer. The most common thyroid problems involve abnormal production of thyroid hormones. Too much thyroid hormone results in a condition known as hyperthyroidism. Insufficient hormone production leads to hypothyroidism.

These hormones affect the entire body. The thyroid also affects your temperature regulation as well as keeping your muscles and organs working properly. When individuals develop a thyroid issue, it can severely affect their lifestyle. Although the effects can be unpleasant or uncomfortable, most thyroid problems can be managed well if properly diagnosed and treated.

Thyroid disorders are very common ailments. The most common issues are:

  • Hypothyroidism – Hyperthyroidism refers to overactivity of the thyroid gland which results in a rapid heartbeat and an increased rate of metabolism
  • Thyroiditis- Thyroiditis is the swelling, or inflammation, of the thyroid gland and can lead to over- or under-production of thyroid hormone
  • Thyroid nodules- Thyroid nodules are solid or fluid-filled lumps that form within your thyroid. Most thyroid nodules are benign and do not indicate a severe medical ailment. Only a small percentage of thyroid nodules are cancerous.
